    Gantries taking shape

Our works are progressing to schedule and the civil engineering phase of the programme for the tunnel’s major upgrade is near completion.

    This work has included:

    • removal of existing gantries on site
    • the completion of four new gantry bases near the tunnel
    • the erection of steel gantries onto these bases for large information signs (9m tall)
    • new gantries on the inside of the tunnel (ongoing this month)
    • works on site around some sign foundations

The gantries will hold electronic information signs displaying live traffic and travel information.

The ducts underneath the road that will eventually house the new cabling are also in place. Our team are pulling huge amounts of cabling through the tunnel to the bridge and to the separate control buildings. There are some 31 miles of cabling involved in this scheme.

Overhead lane signs have been switched off as works are starting on the bridge.

In the coming weeks, the technology installation will continue in and around the tunnel, under overnight closures on weeknights only. We thank everyone for their continued patience during these works.

The 30mph speed limits will remain at present to help manage traffic flows, to protect both the travelling public and tunnel infrastructure. These speed restrictions also help maintain traffic flows along a busy stretch of road.
