National Highways: A38 Saltash Tunnel update (February / March 2026)
Gantries complete - technology installation continues
We've finished our civil engineering work.
We've now installed all gantries, including one west of Carkeel roundabout and one east of Manadon roundabout.
We're continuing electrical works, installing and connecting 64 electrical cabinets.
Our current traffic management will stay in place while we finish this work.
Once installed, we'll rigorously test the new systems to make sure they're working properly.
What's next
We're about to refurbish the tunnel's east service building.
We'll strip out the original 1980s equipment and install new, modern electrics.
This should take us a couple of weeks.
We expect to switch on the new tidal flow lane control system in spring. We'll complete the full scheme later in 2026.
To keep drivers safe, we need specialised technology to operate:
- the tunnel
- its 'reversible' lane - which allows traffic to travel in either direction depending on the time of day or conditions
We're replacing the current tunnel control system, which is approaching the end of its life
Our work includes:
- installing new LED lighting
- modernising power cables and equipment installed when the tunnel was constructed. This includes cabinets, ducts and covers to improve access in the future.
- installing new signs to advise drivers of current conditions
- replacing air quality monitors
- upgrading the tunnel ventilation system
- replacing the existing ‘wig-wag’ crossing with traffic lights that will stop traffic in emergencies and open the diversion route
We're working with our local partners and stakeholders to minimise disruption.
Our work can sometimes overrun. Please bear in mind the dates we give for our work can change.
The tunnel will be closed during the works every night in the week, Monday to Friday.
