Chairman re-elected for a third term

THE first meeting of Morval Parish Council after the local elections also coincided with the Annual Parish Meeting where organisations traditionally report on all their activities during the past year.

It has been estimated that an election for parish councillors in Morval Parish would have cost council taxpayers a total in the region of £2,000 but, following the decision of former council chairman John Collings and Jasmine Fullalove not to seek re-election, there had been no need for a local poll on Thursday, May 1.

At the first meeting of the new council year, Cllr Andy Jackson was re-elected for a third term as chairman and his deputy will be Toni Patterson, possibly the youngest ever councillor to hold the vice-chair’s position.

The council welcomed Steve Murdoch, of Widegates, as a new member but one vacancy still remains and anyone interested in serving the parish and community is asked to contact the Clerk, Laura Storey, for more details.

There may not have been a parish council election in May but parishioners were still asked to go to the polls to elect a Cornwall County councillor to succeed Looe’s Armand Toms, who retired after more than 20 years’ service, latterly in the Looe East and Deviock ward that includes Morval Parish.

The winner of that election was Mark Gibbons, who has served as chairman of the neighbouring Deviock Parish Council for the past four years and has lived in Cornwall for more than 15 years.

Cllr Gibbons introduced himself to councillors and assured them that he would assist the parish council in any way he could.
