Trenode children help lead Remembrance tributes

DESPITE atrocious weather with gusty rain-filled winds and almost vengefully spiteful showers there was an excellent turn-out at the Morval War Memorial for Remembrance Sunday, and it was especially pleasing to see so many young people present.

The ceremony was led by volunteer organiser Mike Willmott, the churchwarden of Morval Parish Church, who has long researched the young parish lives lost in conflict, and wreaths were laid by Morval Parish Council chairman Andy Jackson; Brian Young, on behalf of the Morval Parochial Church Council, and Trenode Church of England School pupils, led by their head teacher Bethany Pike.

‘The Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ were played by the talented Andy Liddicoat, always a staunch support of Morval Remembrance services, and the Standard was carried by another stalwart of these annual ceremonies, come rain or shine, Andrew Chudleigh.

After the War Memorial ceremony, many of the people retired to the nearby Parish Church of St Wenna where there is a lasting commemorative display to the fallen of Morval parish.

A special Remembrance Sunday service was led by Rev Clive Gilbert and the lesson was read by Parish Council chairman Andy Jackson. The organist was Maggie Willmott.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Those with connections to Morval Parish, who lost their lives In the 1914-18 World War, include:

• Colonel Charles Maunoir Sumner, of the South Lancashire Regiment, son of the Rev John Sumner, of Petersfield, Hampshire; husband of Florence Sumner, of Sandplace, who died on June 30, 1916, aged 59, and is buried in Morval Churchyard.
  
• Sergeant Samuel John Trimble, of the 2nd Central Ontario Regiment, Canadian Infantry, son of John and Ellen Trimble of Little Hay, Liskeard, who died on September 21, 1916, aged 28, and his name appears on the Vimy Memorial in France.
  
• Private Harry Sanders of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, son of William and Emma Sanders, of Penarthtown, Morval; husband of Bertha Sanders, of Liskeard, who died on September 16, aged 38, and his name appears on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
  
• Gunner Irwin Harold Lobb, of the Royal Field Artillery, son of Mr and Mrs J Lobb, of Sandplace, who died on February 14, 1917, aged 25 and is buried in Morval Churchyard.
  
• Serjeant George Edward Baker Doney, of the Army Veterinary Corps, son of Samuel Doney, of Stoke, Devonport; husband of Gertrude Doney, of East Looe, who died on May 14, aged 32, and is buried in Anzac Cemetery, Sailly-sur-la-Lys in France.
  
• Private William Henry Snell, of the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, son of Mrs Jane Snell, of Duloe, who died on August 16, 1917, aged 24, and his name appears on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium.
  
• Sapper Ben Badcock, of the Royal Engineers, son of Henry and Lucy Badcock, of Morval, who died on May 21, 1918, aged 41, and is buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria in Greece.

• Trooper Jack Pearce Bowden, of the Royal Armoured Corps, son of Ernest and Annie Bowden, of Looe, who died on November 16, 1940, aged 26 and is buried in Morval Churchyard.
  
• Driver George Penrose, of the Royal Army Service Corps, who died on August 26, 1943, and is buried in Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery in Burma.
  
• Aircraftman 2nd Class Ronald Carr, of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, son of Richard and Violet Ann Carr, of Devonport, who died on April 25,1944, aged 18, and is buried in Morval Churchyard.
  
• Lance Corporal Edgar Francis William Hawkins, of the Royal Army Service Corps, son of Frank and Elizabeth Hawkins; husband of Gwladys Hawkins, of Camelford, who died on June 1, 1944, aged 29, and is buried in Morval Churchyard.
  
• Corporal Michael Fielding Hough, of the Royal Armoured Corps, son of William Norman and Annie Kathleen Hough, of Morval, who died on October 23, 1944, aged 21, and is buried in Coriano Ridge War Cemetery in Italy.
